2009 VS. JON "WAR MACHINE" KOPPENHAVER, A RECAP
Jon Koppenhaver's life has been a long and glorious car wreck ever since we first met him on The Ultimate Fighter, where he was best known for upper-decking a toilet and winning an insane fight against Jared Rollins at the TUF 6 finale. Following his tour of duty on the reality show, Koppenhaver went from quirky and emotional kid to legitimate loose-cannon: He assaulted a man outside of his gym, legally changed his name to War Machine, and was fired from the UFC for an insensitive MySpace blog post published after Evan Tanner's death as well as his refusal to fight Brandon Wolff.
2009 was the year when War Machine went full retard. Shortly after signing on with Bellator, Machine's contract was terminated thanks to a series of online rants suggesting that somebody should maybe assassinate President Obama. Just a few days later, Machine was arrested in Las Vegas for busting heads at a gay nightclub where he was working at the time. The troubled fighter jobbed around regional promotions for a while until a bad judges' decision in a "joke fight" inspired him to search for new revenue streams. Next thing you know, War Machine is waxing his ass on YouTube.
It wasn't long before porn became War's top priority. Things move fast in the adult film world, and War quickly had a handful of scenes under his belt. But a month in the biz only made his personal demons angrier. Now on Twitter, Machine had a brand new venue to go into depression spirals and threaten his own death. Late last month, War Machine caught a few more assault charges when he flew into a rage at a porn star's birthday party and punched a half-dozen guests, including his own agent. Not exactly the best way to endear yourself to a new industry. So what's in store for War Machine in 2010? A lengthy prison sentence? Suicide? Both? War might have been great for tabloid-style entertainment value this year, but if he doesn't find some stability in his life, the next story we hear about him might not be so funny.

SCOTT SMITH WITH ANOTHER SPECTACULAR COMEBACK
Scott Smith came through with a much needed 3rd round KO over previous-Strikeforce champion-turned-film-actor Cung Le in their 185 Strikeforce match up on Saturday.
The KO couldn't have come at a better time for Smith, as there's no doubt that he was losing on all scorecards. It could also be said that this KO couldn't have come at a better time for his career with most of Smith's more notable fights being battles that he lost. Some of Smith's more recent defeats have come from the likes of Robbie Lawlar & Nick Diaz. A win like this over such a high-profile fighter as Cung Le will give him the recognition he needs to swim with the sharks in Strikeforce's incredibly stacked 185 pound division.
Is it just me or does this win only further solidify Nick Diaz as the top contender in this division? You've got all these fighters like Lawlar and Shamrock who make fighting in this division look like the hardest thing in the world. Nick Diaz then turns around and makes tying my shoes look hard as he runs right through these same people.

UFC 104 Machida VS. Shogun
October 24, 2009
Fight Card
Kyle Kingsbury VS. Razak Al-Hassan
Jorge Rivera VS. Rob Kimmons
Stefan Struve VS. Chase Gormley
Yushin Okami VS. Chael Sonnen
Antoni Hardonk VS. Pat Barry
Ryan Bader VS. Eric Schafer
Anthony Johnson VS. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
Joe Stevenson VS. Spencer Fisher
Gleison Tibau VS. Josh Neer
Cain Velasquez VS. Ben Rothwell
I also think Shogun Rua has a better chance at winning the 205lb title belt than most UFC Fans think. This is going to be Shogun's first fight in a long time where he hasn't had to worry about injuries. He was considered one of the best fighters in the world when he competed in PRIDEFC back around 2004 & 2005. Another point of interest involving UFC 104's main event Championship Fight is that Machida & Rua are both Brazilian Fighters. This would normally lead any fan of Mixed Martial Arts to believe that this fight would involve its fair share of Brazilian Jujitsu but this may not be the case. Shogun is a fighter out of Brazil's Chute Box academy which focuses more of muay thai and striking while Machida specializes in Karate. Sportsbook odds will be favoring Velasquez over Rothwell, and Machida over Rua. These may both be good fights to make some money on. Bet a little on both underdogs... not much to lose right?

Kimbo Flops in Ultimate Fighter!
I somehow had the nerve to feel disappointed when Kimbo Slice got mounted up like taxidermy in both rounds of his second round loss by TKO to Roy “Big Country” Nelson. I was keeping hopes alive knowing that a puncher always has a chance in Mixed Martial Arts. These hopes dwindled when Roy Nelson body slammed Kimbo Slice's head into the corner of the UFC Octagon. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is sure to produce some good heavyweight talent from this season of The Ultimate Fighter.
It must also be noted, however, that Roy Nelson has gone on since filming the show to win the Grappler's Quest IV 8-man absolute division tournament finals. He defeated the likes of Brandon Vera, and even Frank Mir himself.
